Account deletion

Deleting your account

You do it yourself, from inside the app, without asking anyone or explaining why.

How

  1. Open Nook with your PIN, then Settings → Delete account.
  2. Enter your password and type your username to confirm.
  3. That's it. Nothing else is needed and nobody has to approve it.

What happens

Straight away: your account stops working. Every device is signed out, notifications stop, you disappear from other people's friend lists, your QR codes stop working and your profile can no longer be read.

For the next 14 days: you can change your mind. Sign in again with the same username and password and everything comes back exactly as it was. There is no form to fill in and nobody to email — signing in is the undo.

After 14 days: the account and everything in it is deleted, and nobody can bring it back — not you, and not us.

The 14 days are real, and worth knowing about. During that window your data is still on our servers, even though the account no longer works. We would rather say so than let "deleted" imply something the system does not do.

Two things that survive, and why

  • Messages you sent to other people. A conversation is stored once, not once per person, so removing yours would empty the other person's history too — years of their conversation deleted because you left. Your messages stay in their copy, attributed to a deleted account rather than to you.
  • Groups you created. They pass to the longest-standing remaining member instead of being destroyed. A group of twenty people should not disappear because one of them closed their account.

Everything else — your account and everything in it — goes.

If you can't get into the app

Lost or broken phone: sign in on any phone — a new one, a borrowed one — enter your PIN on the PIN screen as usual, and delete from Settings there. Deleting needs your username, your password and your PIN, never the phone the account was set up on.

Forgotten password: tap Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen first. A reset code goes to the email address on the account.

Forgotten PIN: once you're signed in, tap Forgot PIN? on the PIN screen. A reset code goes to the email address on the account (or use a backup code); after that, the steps above apply.

There is no other route. Nobody at Nook can delete an account for you, and nobody can undo a deletion — only signing in during the 14 days does that. Both are deliberate: an account that somebody at Nook could delete or bring back on request is an account that somebody could be talked into deleting or bringing back.
